What is a Successful Home Business?

July 24th, 2009

What makes a legitimate home business successful?  The answer to this question is not easy to answer as it really depends on the needs and desires of the home business owner.  A successful and legitimate home business is not simply a business that makes money it involves much more than monetary rewards.  Most successful home business owners can answer yes to the question: Are you satisfied with your work life and business?  People who are happy with their “jobs” are those who find a sense of happiness and completeness with the job.   It usually starts with a detailed list of what you are good at and correlated with a list of what you enjoy doing.  Owning a small business is too complex of a job to not enjoy what you do.

Being happy and satisfied with your job by itself does not make the business successful.  It takes some careful consideration to the details of how the business runs and markets in which the business operates.  It all starts with some sense of strategic and tactical planning.   The reality is that a small business is no different than a big business when it comes to being successful in the long run.  A strategic plan requires that a business have a strong sense of the factors that it takes to be successful.  One of the more helpful tools when starting strategic planning for a small business is a basic SWOT analysis.  What are the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that face the organization?  Performing a SWOT analysis will force the business owner to at least consider the market forces that will be operating in.  The strategic plan should also include a firm set of goals and objectives that help set the trajectory of the business.  These targets are extremely important to starting a successful home business.

What is detailed in a strategic plan?

All strategic plans have common elements that need to be addressed to make sure the business is making significant progress.  All strategic plans should include an operational plan, marketing plan and financial plan in the body of the material.  One of the most common pitfalls that face most small business owners is over promising what they can deliver.  The operational plan helps to better plan out our limited small business resources.  Since many small businesses are sole proprietorships, the owner must also provide the goods and services to the client.  This can easily lead to taking on too much business and not being able to provide high quality products and services.   A carefully laid out operational plan will give the owner a sense of what they can legitimately provide to their clients.

In addition to the operational plan every small business must plan out specifically how they are going to win business in their marketing plan. In order to sell a good or service it is a prerequisite that some need of the customer is satisfied.  How well a small business owner knows their customers is a harbinger of success for the organization.  In addition, the operational plan is dependent upon this component in order to be successful.  It is impossible to the provide customers with goods and services unless a firm understanding of the needs and wants is known.

Finally, how much will it cost to reach the goals of the business?  One of the reasons it is so vital to have good strategic goals and metrics is that it provides a basis to compare the financials too when making progress toward the company goals.  What is the ROI, ROA and ROE of the financial investments made by the firm?  Successful small businesses have a detailed understanding of how their money is being spent and what types of returns they receive on their money.

It certainly is not an easy task to build a small business; however, if a prospective small business owner pays attention to the details they will be much more successful.  Most big businesses started small!  There is a reason that they got big and as small business owners we should pay attention to those elements that separate the wheat from the chafe.

Legitimate Home Busines Online

June 1st, 2009

In today’s world one of the first places people think of to start a business is the internet.  Online home business is the first thing on people’s mind.  The problem of course is that the online world is absolutely littered with scams and people looking to make money off of you. It seems to be nearly impossible to find a legitimate home business.  Trust me, I have read the majority of these online infomercials.  Or perhaps it just feels that way.  It would literally be impossible to read them all as they are seemingly never ending.  And even if you read all the ones created from this point backward, heavens knows the online realm will only be further littered with that many more of these scams.  The key of course being that they work to some degree and that entails that people will continually be creating them to try and scam more and more people from their hard earned money.  Suffice to say that the internet can be a scary place if you don’t want to be scammed.
That said, there are legitimate ways to make money online.  The key things to remember is that is almost always in your best interest to put in some “sweat” equity prior to laying out any amount of cash.  There are always people out there willing to sell you the next great short cut.  And not all of them are scams.  But at the beginning you are not going to know which of these are worthwhile.  Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that things will be fast and easy.  There is a very small chance that this will be the case.  But most likely it is going to take a fair amount of work.  Learning and work.  Trust me, if you put in the effort you will eventually begin to see how the whole process works.
Which should be highlighted.  Online home business is like just about any other home business in one very specific way: you are going to have to put in your time.  For that reason you had better make sure that you are willing to put in the time.  To do that, trust me you are going to have to enjoy doing it.  If you are hating spending time online, you are going to hate running an internet home business.  And be truthful with yourself, if you are on the fence about whether you will enjoy the process you had better think a couple of times.  Make sure that being on a computer and surfing the web are things that you enjoy.  You are going to need to be doing a fair amount of it to make sure that your online home business is successful.
To be sure, if you hear anyone tell you that making money online is easy or doesn’t take any time to learn the ropes and build a successful business, run don’t walk the other way.  Sure there are ways can make it a bit easier and less time consuming, but if you don’t put in your time your are not going to be successful.  Scams are always making things sound easy and not time consuming.  Legitimate online home business is going to be a labor of love, at least at the beginning.  If you do anything purely for the money you are likely to fail.  Just like any other business there are nuances and tricks of the trade that are not easy to wrap your head around with at the beginning.  That doesn’t mean they are overly difficult, just that you need to get yourself immersed in the process before it becomes apparent why certain things are important to do.
There is no doubt that an online home business can be a great way to get into the home business world.  The barriers for beginning are relatively small, and nearly everyone these days has access to the internet.  The hours are completely up to you and the time that you choose to do your work is completely flexible.  If you choose to work at 3 a.m. or 2 p.m. it doesn’t matter, as long as you put in your time.  For that reason it is a great small business for mothers, students, and people with a full time job.  That doesn’t mean that it can’t be your full time occupation, just that it lends itself to part time work or a flexible work schedule.  If you like being on the internet, maybe it is time to check out starting that legitimate home business online today.

Legitimate Home Business

Legitimate Home Business

Welcome to legitimate home business. This site will be dedicated to discussion truly legitimate home businesses. We are dedicated toward discussing business opportunities that are both legitimate as well as making consumers aware of all the business scams and online home business scams promising you money. Our objective is to help potential business owners become more aware of what are the real legitimate business opportunities. Our second goal of this site is to highlight some of our own small business ventures that have both gone good and bad as well as share those best practices. Our aim is to help our readers become more aware the opportunities and pitfalls in today’s business environment. Thank you for taking the opportunity to read the information we provide on our site.

What makes a opportunity a legitimate business opportunity? To further discuss this concept we need to delve in to the meaning of the word legitimate. According to dictionary.com the word legitimate is defined as being both real, legally binding and of substance. These words have significant meaning as we explore legitimate business opportunities. Lets be honest, the internet and late night television is ripe with rip-off artists that claim they have truly uncovered how to get rich quick. In reality, they simply they take advantage of the consumers around the globe, Especially in these times when everyone is hurting both financially and emotionally because of lost jobs and the global recession. The temptation to use these services and products is understandable as the information they present in the infomercials show people with nice houses, fancy cars and living the lifestyle of the rich and famous. The reality is that in most of those instances it is only the inventor of the system that is wealthy since they are selling their product to the consumer not because the system is effective.

The reality is that many of these approaches can be effective, but to do anything well it takes hard work, patience and a willingness to learn. What makes the business legitimate is your ability to stick with it and learn the parts that work and don’t work. The age old saying that if it is too good to be true then it probably is has never been more appropriate then it is today. When you see a advertisement that says make a $1000 part time at home, there is a real good chance that it is completely a scam. If was that easy everyone would already be doing it!

Our philosophy is a pretty simply philosophy. Work hard, stick with it, learn as much as you can and eventually the $$$ will start to show up. In every business I have ever started it always takes some time to get it off the ground and then it takes even more time to make it successful.. Your ability to create a competitive advantage over competitors requires a business owner to execute an existing system perfectly or learn a new way that sets you apart from the competition. The questions you need to ask yourself as you enter any business is: 1) do you enjoy what you are doing; and 2) do you have the patience to see the business through. The institute for small business (SBI) reports that over 9 out of 10 businesses fail in the first 2 years, and that of the remaining 10% an additional 80% will be our of business within 5 years. That is an astonishing 2% of all businesses started will last over 5 years. This means that the business owner needs to understand that as you build your business the monetary return will never be instantaneous, but rather a slow momentum building effort. This is especially true if you want to use the Internet as your vehicle to make money.

One of our aims is to help make the general public aware of the current opportunities that exist, the current research on the subject of small business development and general approaches to starting a home business. As we develop this site we encourage as much feedback from our readers on topics they would like discussed. Thank you for taking time to read this post and we look forward to interacting with you on this website in the future.
