Elna Cain Course Review: Write Your Way To $1k
Before I get into the meat and bones, I think it’s important to understand why anyone would want to take a freelance writing course in the first place. Any seasoned writer can tell you that learning the freelance biz is a trial-and-error process. You start at the bottom, make some mistakes, and learn a bunch on the way up.
When starting out though, there are a lot of question marks surrounding how to find work, what to say to clients, what to charge, etc.
For writers, it takes them years to really get into the know-how of things. If you were looking to start earning a stable income –say like, yesterday– then that leaves little time for a learning curve. You need a step-by-step plan.
Taking a course will put you on the express train, spare you ample mistakes, and save you the hassle of researching endless blog posts that all essentially give you the same old, outdated info.
Who is Elna Cain?
In case you’re unfamiliar with the course creator Elna Cain, she’s a professional writer who has been in the industry for over 5 years.
Elna shares her expertise in writing and mom-blogging on ElnaCain.com and TwinsMommy.com. She also has a successful freelance writing business over at Innovativeink.ca where you can see she has worked with businesses like Walmart and The Huffington Post.
As Elna holds your hand through this course, she shares experiences from her own journey. She tells it straight, sharing what worked, and what didn’t, and you can clearly see her growth as a writer getting paid real money for her skills.
What’s Included in Write to $1k?
Elna’s course is made up of over 10 sections, all broken down into smaller modules. Be forewarned, the majority of this course is text-based with some videos sprinkled in between–which I wasn’t expecting and didn’t care too much for (but more on that later).
The course starts by going over the basics. You will get some mindset training, start-up costs, setting up your office, choosing your writing niche, goal-setting, and other things you need to know as a new freelance writer and business owner.
After that, you get into the step-by-step of how to set up a website for your business, or “writer platform” as Elna calls it. You’ll also learn exactly how to build a portfolio (even if you have no writing experience), how to find clients, and pitch to them.
Elna includes business training on corresponding with clients, getting paid, and helpful tools–including a sample client service agreement and invoice you can easily download and modify to suite your needs.
There’s also some advanced training on breaking into specific writing niches like white paper writing, medical writing, and writing for brands. And a module on how to become a self-published author if that’s something you’re interested in for the future.
As part of the course, you get access to Elna’s private Facebook group which is exclusive to her students. She describes it as a “highly resourceful group with freelancers that ‘get you’ and is packed full of value.”
In the group, you’ll get live trainings and challenges within the group and have the opportunity to ask Elna questions. And who doesn’t want access to a writing and business coach?!?
One of the highlights of the course are Elna’s mega-helpful pitching templates that you can customize and use to quickly start landing gigs.
Elna will also allow you to send her a copy of your pitch for review so she can help you craft it to perfection.
Some other noteworthy course bonuses:
Level Up Your Freelance Writing Business
This is a robust 35 page eBook that offers 6 ways you can level up your freelance writing business. These steps give you easy, obtainable things that educate you to improve your writing, become more professional, and to make more money. Elna’s guide will give you a shot in the arm of confidence through great information, examples, and resources on how to be successful in finding your first few clients.

Book Clients in 30 Days
This is another ebook that is a compliment to the course lessons in Write Your Way to Your First $1k. You’ve done the work, now it’s time to put your nose to the grindstone.
This guide walks with you on your journey to starting out as a freelance writer, giving you daily tasks to do. Some tasks are short, while others take a few hours. Through these daily tasks (30 of them!) you will be doing the necessary work to land your first client (and more!).
Keep in mind, that this course is for general freelance writing. It does offer some training in specific writing niches, but if you want to dive deep into an area of writing like copywriting, SEO, etc. you might do well to take a course that specializes in that field of writing instead.
This training will equip you with all the need-to-knows on starting as a freelance writer and get you to consistent $1K months as promised.

What I Liked About Write Your Way To 1k
If you’re lost about what to charge as a new freelancer or how you should correspond with clients, this course will answer many of those beginner questions. Elna not only gives you the answers here, but draws it from her own experience.
She shares specific examples of pitches she used with clients and shows how her pitch evolved over time. This is very useful for new writers if they have never worked as a freelancer before.
If you’re brand-spanking new to the freelancing world, I think Write Your Way To $1K gives a pretty comprehensive overview of exactly how to start and what to expect.
And if you have limited time to work on your business (for example, you are starting your business while working full-time, or you have a toddler and another baby on the way) then becoming a freelance writer is a great career path for you. As a writer, you’ll have the freedom to work the hours that are best for you.
What I Didn’t Like So Much About This Course
One bummer about this course is the amount of text used throughout. I would say it’s about 50% to 60% text-based. As you go through each module, it can start to feel like you are reading one long blog post right after another.
However, it really depends on your personal learning style. I think I’m an auditory learner.
Elna is careful to use video when it’s necessary. For example, in the section on setting up your website, she includes a detailed 17-minute video on “How to Create a Portfolio Page in the Block Editor of WordPress”
As an alternative, I would have loved to see more video content similar to what Elna shares on her YouTube channel. Being that creating videos isn’t new for her, it’s definitely a route Elna could have taken with some of the modules. But this is just my personal preference.
When you purchase the course you have lifetime access so it will be interesting to see if more video is included in course updates.
With Elna Cain as your coach, what results should you expect?
If you complete this course, have any kind of knack for writing, and are persistent, you will make money as a freelance writer! Elna shares solid principles that will work for anyone looking to start a freelance writing biz.
It wouldn’t be far-fetched to say you could make a return on what you invest in the course within 30 days if you pitch and market yourself. You should definitely follow Elna’s instructions in the included book I mentioned above – BOOK CLIENTS IN 30 DAYS
As far as reaching $1K months consistently, it all depends on your skill level and where you’re at in your freelance journey. If you’re just starting out and working only part-time, it could take anywhere from 2 to 3 months.
But once you fall into your groove, you can do definitely do it! Have faith!
You could also try your hand at adding additional services that will increase the rates you can charge or the number of clients you sign.
For example, if you write blog posts, you could learn the basics of WordPress and offer to save the posts as drafts in your client’s dashboard. Clients love that extra service – trust me, I know!
You could also write social media descriptions for Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter.
You could also offer proofreading services for other writers. Grammarly makes proofreading a breeze. The app edits online text checks grammar and spelling and even has a plagiarism detector.
(Proofreading is another great business idea, especially if you are an introvert and want maximum flexibility with your schedule. and you can check out my blog post How To Become A Freelance Proofreader)
Elna’s sales page claims this course will be a “proven shortcut that sets you up for success.” And while the course will help you get ahead faster, this can also give students false hope that those $1K months instantaneously. It’s a course, not a coffee pot!
Starting out as a brand new freelance writer can be hard. Especially in a tight economy where everyone is counting their pennies. It’s not always easy to find clients, and the industry is becoming more competitive.
Even with an A-player like Elna on your side, it’s up to you to work hard, and avoid shiny object syndrome. To succeed with any business you need to stay focused and be persistent.
Elna Cain Course Review – The Final Verdict
Whenever I consider taking a course, I wonder–what value does this bring? Are they teaching me something I could easily teach myself?
While some of the information found in Write Your Way To 1K can be found online for free on Elna’s website, ElnaCain.com, it won’t be as conveniently formatted and condensed. (Time is money!)
You also would not receive Elna’s personal review of your pitch packet. Elna’s personal review is worth at least three times more than she is charging for this course.
It’s super important to note as well that the purpose of this course is to get you to consistent 1k months. While Elna does give more “advanced” training in the later modules, you should still build your business on a solid foundation. So be sure to go through most of the basic modules as well.
The final verdict: Elna’s course is a thorough starting point for aspiring freelance writers. Freelance writing is one of the most flexible home business ideas that you can transform into an amazing career.
