Has your home office become the catch-all for anything and everything that doesn’t have a home in the rest of your house? Your ability to get and stay organized will determine your income, your lifestyle, and your family’s future.
While the home office is supposed to be the place to actually work, it’s often a place that just gathers EVERYTHING! The desk gets covered quickly with paperwork, the drawers are stuffed full of items to keep out of sight, and the floor area seems to be the ideal place for stacking anything and everything from other rooms that I’m just not quite ready to get rid of.
When I finally took a weekend to get seriously organized, I found that it was best to just keep things simple. Here are 7 home organization tips that I followed to get my home office setup:
Get rid of excess paper
Paper causes so much clutter! We don’t need hard copies of EVERYTHING. Recycle it, shred it, do what you need to do. Just cut down on the excess paper and remember to keep things digital unless you absolutely need to print.
Move the shredder to your foyer
Who knew that you could get so much junk mail in a week? And where does it all go? Right to the home office desk.
The key to not covering your desk with junk mail is to make sure that it NEVER leaves the foyer.
I put a small shredder right by the front door of my house. It’s small enough that’s it’s not easily noticeable. And, if a guest does notice it then I just consider it a great conversation starter – everybody likes a good clutter control tip.
Stop wasting desk space and start hanging stuff
Instead of taking up space on your desk with cute little trinkets, hang some floating shelves on the walls, and have the items placed there. Not only does it clear up more room on your desk, but it also adds an easy touch of decoration to your home office too!
Make use of pretty glass jars
I love to be thrifty and resourceful. In fact, I’ve got a saying “If it’s free, it’s for me.” My pens, pencils, highlighters, binder clips, paper clips, and rubber bands are neatly arranged in old Classico Pasta Sauce and Tostitos Chunky Salsa glass jars. I love the pretty mason jar look – who knew that a used glass jar could have such a big impact?
Consider plastic bins your friend
Have extra medium size plastic bins that you aren’t quite sure what to do with? Use them in your small home office to create a useful side table. I have 2 colorful bins stacked on top of each other next to my reading chair.
Hide bulky items
Store your printer or other bulky items in an area that isn’t visible. Computer towers can go on the floor under your desk. Since I don’t use my printer that often, I have it stored away in one of my plastic bins. This keeps me in intentional with what I do print. I love saving money on paper and toner!
Ask a family member for their opinion
What you view as being uncluttered may not be the same way that others view it. Have your family members give their advice, and then act on it. Their opinions can help in organizing your home office even more! Plus, you never know what cool ideas they might come up with – or junk they want for themselves that you can get rid of!
The bottom line on home office organization ideas on a budget
When working from home your clothes can be totally casual. I’m thinking t-shirt, yoga pants, etc. But to be productive your workspace should be professional. Download the home office checklist and give your workspace a review today.
